Lukas Schmocker completed his studies in Civil Engineering at ETH Zurich in 2006 with a diploma thesis on the air entrainment in ski jump jets at spillways. He obtained his PhD degree in 2011 at the Laboratory of Hydraulics, Hydrology, and Glaciology (VAW), ETH Zurich, and specialized in the overtopping and breaching of dams. At the same time he worked in the river engineering division of VAW and investigated hazardous processes related to driftwood transport and blocking. In 2013, he joined the engineering company Basler & Hofmann and works part-time as a project leader on flood management projects. In August 2014, he joined the SCCER-SoE team as a hydraulic research scientist.
Lukas Schmocker is part of the Hydropower team and his research will focus on hydropower production and infrastructure adaption. The main project aims at the improvement of sediment evacuation systems to counteract reservoir sedimentation and guarantee reservoir sustainability in the future. Further research includes problems relating to air entrainment in hydropower systems and floating debris at spillways. The goals are to guarantee a safe and efficient operation of hydropower plants under both changing climate and environmental conditions.
