João Nuno Fernandes completed his studies in Civil Engineering at IST from the Lisbon University at 2003 with a final project related to local scour downstream thin vertical weirs on movable bed open channels. He obtained his PhD at the same university under the theme of the flow characterization in compound channels with and without vegetation. He worked in a consultancy firm for one year and as a Research Fellow in the Hydraulics and Environmental Department of the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering in Lisbon from 2004 to 2014. He conducted consultancy and research projects dealing with flood management, hydraulic structures, water quality and sediment transport. From 2012 to 2014 he was appointed as an Invited Assistant Professor in the Civil Department of the New University of Lisbon teaching General and Urban Hydraulics. In January 2015, he joined ETH Zurich and the SCCER-SoE team as a Postdoctoral Researcher.
João Nuno Fernandes works as a member of the Hydropower Team of the SCCER-SoE in the WP2 - hydropower usage. He will be responsible for developing and managing research projects. His research will focus on hydropower production and infrastructure adaption. The main projects deal with the adequate sediment handling at high-head hydropower plants in order to increase scheme efficiency and with sediment bypass tunnels. The goals are to guarantee a safe and efficient operation of hydropower plants under both changing climate and environmental conditions.
